The Shulchan Aruch Initiative started on January 1, 2022.

During 2022 we studied the laws of Tzitzis, Teffilin, and Shema. We are ready to start the laws of Shemoneh Esrei.

You are invited to be a part of it!

Give Yourself the Gift of Halacha!

Can you complete a cycle of Shulchan Aruch in 300 hours?

You certainly can! If you study in 10 minute sessions with TEACH613™

We at TEACH613™ have begun signup for our new program Shulchan Aruch Initiative. Fondly nicknamed SHAI, which means “a gift,” or “Take Ten” because it is modeled after our highly successful Take Ten for Talmud program, the goal with the Shulchan Aruch Initiative is to enable participants to become familiar with all areas of Halacha (Jewish law).

Interestingly, when Rabbi Yosef Kairo initially published the Shulchan Aruch he suggested that it be used as a review on all areas of Halacha, by studying the entire Shulchan Aruch at a pace of completing it every 30 days. By slowing the pace down just a bit, Shulchan Aruch Initiative can be a great introduction (and review) for all areas of Halacha (Jewish law). Join us on this historic journey through the classic volumes upon which all practical Jewish observance is based.

It is fascinating that when Rabbi Meir Shapiro initially presented Daf Yomi, one of his motivations was that the Jewish people should become familiar with all areas of the Talmud, not just the ones that were typically studied. Similarly, the goal with Shulchan Aruch Initiative is to indeed, study the highlights of one chapter a day, and proceed to study not only Orach Chayim (the cycle of the day and holidays of the year), but also Yoreh Deah, Choshen Mishpat, and Even Hoezer encompassing the advanced laws of Jewish observance including Shechita, Mikva, financial law, and marriage.

Shulchan Aruch Initiative is similar in many ways to our popular Take Ten for Talmud series. Like Take Ten for Talmud, each audio segment will be approximately 10 minutes. Like Take Ten for Talmud which helped bridge many people into the study of Talmud, we hope that Shulchan Aruch Initiative will open the door to in-depth, practical Halacha for countless people. Like Take Ten for Talmud each ten-minute session will be titled so that you can join with ease at a pace that is enjoyable for you. For our first cycle our plan is to produce 2 sessions per week (Sunday and Tuesday) with an interactive zoom review session on Thursday evening.

Subscription to Shulchan Aruch Initiative is $180/year or $18/month. Even if you choose not to join as a participant, we invite you to register as a donor, to show your support to this historic endeavor.

Thank you for being part of the TEACH613™ family. May we share good news with one another.

What is Shulchan Aruch and what is this initiative?

Shulchan Aruch is the classic set of books of Halacha (Jewish law). Coauthored by Rabbi Yosef Kairo and Rabbi Moshe Isserles, this set of books is the authoritative starting point for any discussion of practical Jewish law. The Shulchan Aruch Initiative by TEACH613™ is setting out to complete a cycle of the entire 10 volumes, starting on January 1,2022.

Why January 1?

Many of us will recall the most recent Siyum on Daf Yomi which took place on January 1, 2020. It was an international celebration unifying Jews of all walks of life to whom Torah study is important. This initiative will focus on the same “daily study” concept as Daf Yomi. But, whereas Daf Yomi focuses on Talmud study, this program will focus on Halacha.

What is unique about the Shulchan Aruch Initiative?

During the last cycle of Daf Yomi TEACH613™ completed the celebrated Take Ten for Talmud series, which provided participants with a ten minute daily session based on highlights of the daily Daf. Shulchan Aruch Initiative will provide a similar ten minute session based on the chapters of Shulchan Aruch. Like Daf Yomi which aimed to make all parts of Talmud familiar to the participants, this initiative aims to make all chapters of Shulchan Aruch familiar to the participants.

How many volumes are there in Shulchan Aruch?

Over the years there have been many different printings of Shulchan Aruch. Many common printings have divided Shulchan Aruch into ten volumes:

Orach Chayim- Daily Living, including Shabbos and Yom Tov (3 volumes)

Yoreh Deah- Advanced Study, including Shechita, interest free loans, Mikva, and Aveilus (3 volumes)

Choshen Mishpat- Financial Law, including loans, employee law, and damages (3 volumes)

Even Hoezer- Matrimonial Law, including marriage and divorce (1 volume)

Is there any precedent for studying Shulchan Aruch at such a pace?

Yes, actually Rabbi Yosef Kairo himself envisioned the Shulchan Aruch as a contribution to Jewish literature that would be studied in its entirety every 30 days. Our program is designed to be completed over a number of years, due to the fact that our sessions are only 10 minutes each, amounting to about 300 hours in total.

Who is the presenter on these recordings?

Rabbi Mordechai Rhine, the presenter from Take Ten for Talmud, will be the teacher for this series. His ability to translate and articulate difficult concepts smoothly and clearly has enabled so many participants to find their place in Torah study.

Will there be an opportunity to ask questions?

Yes, we are planning a Zoom session for Thursday evenings at 9pm (eastern) as a question/ answer forum on the topics of the week. Also, participants can reach out by email with questions or to reserve a phone appointment.

How does subscription work?

Participants can subscribe by filling out the application below and choosing a payment plan of $180/year or $18/month. The 2 day a week audio recording will be available by email and Whatsapp.
